OBJECTIVE OF SOP:

For an international MBA degree, the students are required to show their IELTS score, resume, entrance exam scores, some recommendations, and some other miscellaneous information. This essentially is the first round of the MBA interview process.

The main objective of these documents is to tell the admission officer about what you have done in the past and your accomplishments reaching this point. However, these documents do not tell why you want an MBA degree from that particular institution.

In simple words, the Statement of Purpose is an essay outlining your career goals. Most of the MBA aspirants have work experience and therefore they have so many things to include in the SOP which makes it somewhat challenging to write a good one. For MBA, the SOP should include roles you have been playing in an organization and what role would you like to play after the completion of the course.

FORMAT OF SOP:-

Most b-schools don’t have any guidelines related to what they would like to see in the SOP while the remaining clearly provides hints about what they are expecting from the SOP. It is important to understand that an SOP is different from a resume and bullet points won’t work.

The SOP must have short paragraphs which are logically connected to each other. Here is a structure of what the SOP should look like. Ideally, there should be about 4 – 6 paragraphs in the SOP.

  1. The first paragraph should be about yourself and your family background.
  2. The second paragraph should contain accomplishments from your professional life.
  3. The third one should talk about your career goals.
  4. The next one should highlight why you are going for an MBA and how will it help your career.
  5. And the last paragraph should contain reasons why you have chosen that particular college for

The admission department doesn’t want to read content which is already mentioned in your resume. Make sure the contents of the SOP are a bit different.

LENGTH AND WORD COUNT OF THE SOP:

As mentioned above, 4 – 6 paragraphs are more than enough. B-schools don’t specify the word limit of the SOP. Some aspirants see this as an opportunity to write everything they have done in life. In other words, they let their words flow.

However, too much information can make the admission officer’s eyes sore. Seek Consultants help students to write concise SOPs which are sure to sail you through the admission process.

It is recommended that you keep the word count between 500 – 700 words which are divided into 4 – 6 paragraphs. However, your focus should be on the content and presentation of it rather than word count.
